Hurricanes, tornadoes, fires, snow storms, and ice storms can have a huge impact on our life on any given day. I used to make a joke out of my grandmother’s preparation for emergencies but as I’ve gotten older and see the devastation people go through, I realize it’s always good to be prepared!
Each family member should have their own bag for specific needs, such as medications, a list of important phone numbers, or infant formula. You can also have copies of important documents.
A Basic Kit:
– Water for drinking and washing
– Food, a minimum of three days worth
– Battery-powered radio and extra batteries
– Flashlight and extra batteries
– First Aid kit
– Formula and diapers, if you have an infant
– Wipes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
– Dust mask or cotton t-shirt, to help filter the air
– Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
– Wrench, pliers, and screwdriver to turn off utilities
– Can opener for food for canned food
Cold weather climate:
– A jacket or coat
– Long pants
– A long sleeve shirt
– Sturdy shoes
– A hat and gloves
– A sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person
– Personal hygiene items
