Planning a Getaway This Summer

July 20, 2020 Rachel Ferrucci

For most of us, our summer holiday or vacation is the highlight of our year. It’s something we look forward to and something that gives us a goal to aim towards throughout the rest of the year. Of course, 2020 hasn’t been the most typical of times. The coronavirus pandemic has seen the vast majority of countries shut or limit access to their borders, with the majority of governments encouraging people to stay at home at all costs. For months, only essential workers have been leaving the house to keep the world ticking over, while the rest of us have been cooped up indoors to slow the spread of an unexpected, contagious and potentially deadly disease. It’s not all too surprising, then, that most of our holidays have been cancelled or postponed until next year. This can be disheartening, but it has all been worth it in order to reduce the number of people physically impacted by coronavirus and Covid-19. Now, the past month or so has seen a reduction in cases for many countries and more and more governments are reducing restrictions and allowing us to have more freedom of movement. Of course, international travel might not be back on the cards yet. But that’s not to say you can’t still have your summer break. Instead, you might want to consider something a little closer to home – and camping could be the perfect option!

Camping Could Be a Safe Option

Of course, safety is key when it comes to planning anything at the moment. But camping really could be the ideal solution to a summer getaway – even during these unprecedented times. Camping is a simple and straightforward way to spend an extended period of time away from the confines of your home, without necessarily having to come into close contact with others. There are a couple of ways to do this.

Camper Vans

First, you might want to consider a camper van. This provides a little luxury and a home away from home feel. You will be completely self sufficient, being able to drive to your desired destination and being able to stay in the campervan overnight. Many also have kitchens, allowing you to cook your own food, and bathrooms, so you can shower in your own environment without having to share the space with anyone outside of your bubble. Just make sure to opt for a reliable camper to avoid instances of breaking down.

Tents

Alternatively, you can go for the more traditional means of camping – camping in a tent. There are all sorts of tents out there, so there’s bound to be one that meets your needs. Whether that’s a 10 person tent to accommodate your whole family or you and your housemates, or a simple 2 person tent to accommodate yourself and a partner. Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to camp at a site with resources, such as electricity, running water and even showers and toilets to make the trip as pleasant as possible. Just make sure to follow social distancing guidelines and to maintain high levels of hygiene when using any shared facilities.

Deciding Where to Go

Now, you may be wondering where to go when camping. Right now, it’s a good idea to stay relatively close to home. But chances are, there are plenty of destinations nearby that will offer a lot. If you live near the coast, you’re in luck. But even those of us within cities could stray out into local countryside to find some beautiful scenery and sites. Just do a little research to determine what your local area has on offer. You’re bound to find something that will bring a smile to your face.

Basic Safety

Make sure to read up on basic camping safety before actually heading away. While camping is simple, there are some things that you should know. This includes advice like always carrying a first aid kit, knowing how to safely put out campfires and not to use BBQs or other items inside your tent. This may all sound basic, but being aware of these things could prove potentially life saving, as mistakes are easily made.

These are just a few pieces of information that could help you to secure an enjoyable getaway this summer against all odds. Hopefully, some of the tips and tricks will help and you’ll be able to form happy memories of 2020 to hold onto.

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
