Preparing The Perfect Airport Snacks

January 21, 2020 Rachel Ferrucci

Is it too early to think about your next holiday? If you’re still in the process of planning where you should go, now’s the time to be smart about it. After all, we all have a dream vacation that keeps us awake at night. This is where I would go if I ever won the lottery, you tell yourself. But what are your chances of winning the lottery?

In reality, with a little know-how and clever planning, you can already afford your dream vacation. For real? Yes. But, it means being wise about your money. Even if you find a super offer in the travel sales, you have to make sure you’re not going to splurge out when you get to the airport. Indeed, we all know how hungry you can get on long-haul flights. So, instead of wasting your money on the airline snacks, here are some smart choices for you:

veggie snack cups

Nothing like homemade hummus with some crunchy sticks

Wait a minute: Can you bring hummus on a plane? TSA is very strict about what you can and can’t bring on a plane, but hummus is fine in carry-on baggage for domestic flights and international flights. You will need to pack only 100ml as per required by the airport security in a safe container – such as a small Tupperware pot in a TSA approved zip bag. You can follow this classic homemade recipe for a smooth and delicious snack. Add some carrot and celery sticks, and you’ve got yourself a yummy and healthy treat.

Turn up with an exciting sandwich

Sure, we all know about sandwiches. But sandwiches can get a little boring. Instead, opt for something likely to taste fresh in a pressurized environment, such as a rice sandwich. It’s the perfect sandwich alternative for sushi lovers, and you can find a simple onigirazu recipe on this vegan blog. Should you go vegan? Ideally, for a long haul flight, it’s the best option as meat and eggs might go bad if you can’t keep them in the fridge.

Breakfast in a pot

Who doesn’t like granola? There’s so much flavor in every bite! Admittedly, bringing a bowl of fresh granola might be tricky, but you can bring a jar of your homemade nutty yum. Using a container in which you can add some yogurt or milk afterward to prepare the perfect bowl is a great idea. You can cheat a little and buy some milk once you’ve passed the airport security checks, or you can pack a small bottle of milk in your carry-on bag – no more than 100ml.

Buying your favs in advance

Last but not least, it’s best to avoid eating airport food if you can at all avoid it. Salads and mains tend to be overpriced, and they are not always a healthy option. But you can bring snacks bought in shops. A pack of kale crisps and some fresh fruit can go a long way and keep you full for hours!

Airport snacks are the most commonly overlooked money pitfall. When you’re going on holiday, you need to pack with you a selection of snacks for your light. Don’t hesitate to make your own; many homemade treats are authorized on planes. If you’re unsure, you can check with the TSA.

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
