Should You Get a Tattoo?

November 17, 2019 Rachel Ferrucci

Tattoos date back thousands of years. In some cultures around the world, tattoos are a sign of status, wealth, or position. For some, tattoos tell a story. For others, they are little more than a permanent fashion statement. We all have different reasons for tattoos and different meanings behind our choices. While their styles and trends come and go, and the processes of tattooing might vary, they remain popular all over the world.

But, deciding to get your first tattoo can be tough. Some people get that first ink to mark or remember a specific event. Others just do it because they want one. There’s no right reason and no right time. But, before you rush off to get yourself inked, you should make sure you are ready and that it is something that you really want.

Do You Want One?

The first thing you should ask yourself is whether or not you want a tattoo. And, whether you want it for the long haul. Sure, you can get tattoos removed, but it’s not an easy process, and it can be expensive. Ask yourself whether you really want a tattoo, or if you just like the idea of having one.

Do You Have a Design in Mind?

If you don’t have a specific design or at least an idea of what you want, then chances are, you just want a tattoo because you like the idea of it. People that feel like this are more likely to regret their decision in the future. Think about what kind of tattoo you’d like, but also what style, colors and shades, and of course, where on your body you would like it in more detail before making a definite decision.

Why Do You Want a Tattoo?

Some people just want a tattoo because they like them. But, for others, there’s a reason. You might want a tattoo to remember, or honor, someone that you’ve lost, or to mark an important time in your life. There’s no right or wrong reason, but ask yourself how you might feel about your tattoo in ten years if you are getting it for a reason that might not be as relevant to your life in the future.

Do You Change Your Style Often?

Are you the sort of person that changes their mind a lot? Do your tastes in clothes, jewelry, and makeup change regularly? Or do you tend to stick with the things that you love? If you change your mind often, you might want to take a little longer to think about it.

Have You Found the Right Artist?

Don’t rush in and get a tattoo in the first place that you see. Artists use different tools and stencil paper. They have different specialties and styles, as well as varying levels of skill and experience. Finding the right artist for your first tattoo is essential.

Look around your local area, search for tattoo artists online, check profiles on Instagram and Pinterest, and ask people that you know for recommendations. Then, visit to talk about your ideas before you commit.

Are You Prepared For Other People’s Reactions?

You shouldn’t care what other people think, but you should be prepared to find out. People with visible tattoos still face judgement. Are you ready for that?

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
