7 Risks You Don’t Know You’re Taking On A Spa/Beauty Day

June 3, 2019 Rachel Ferrucci

Can you imagine anything more relaxing and satisfying than an afternoon dedicated to pampering and beauty? Whether you’re stressed out or you’re simply feeling a little down, a spa or beauty treatment is often the best way to find your smile back. There’s a reason for that. It’s in human nature to crave physical contact. While your beauty technician may not be hugging you, the work they do is a form of self-hug for your body. Additionally, every girl likes to feel pretty, and your afternoon of pampering is going to achieve just that. Depending on your budget and the availability at your nearest salon, you might opt for an appointment or home spa day. But, it doesn’t matter because you already know how much better this is going to make you feel, right.

In theory, you’re right. Nothing boosts your mood as much as pampering. But you might be taking inconsiderate risks without even knowing it. Could your beauty treatment affect your health? The scary answer is yes, yes it definitely can. It doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t book your next spa day. But, you need to understand the potential dangers of this beautiful hobby. If you’re a spa and beauty addict, these are the top 7 things you want to avoid when looking about your skin and body.

#1. Spa day at home: The risk of buying new products

Throwing a spa day at home can be both fun and rewarding. It’s often the occasion to give the good old bathroom a deep clean before you can relax in your fluffiest robe with a fragrant facial mask. one thing to bear in mind, though, is that if you’re planning your very own spa adventure, you should be very attentive to the labels. It’s best not to buy products you’ve never tried before if you’re going for a full-on afternoon or evening of pampering. You should stick to known and trusted brands if you want to avoid unpleasant reactions. Typically, if you have never bought beauty products besides your daily facial cream, you want to focus your attention on products that contain 100% natural ingredients. If you know that a specific component can cause an allergic reaction, it’s best to stay away from anything in the same ingredient family. For example, if strawberries give you a rash, it might be prudent to avoid over red berries. Additionally, make sure to time your home treatments precisely as leaving a mask for too long could lead to skin irritation.

#2. It’s not hygienic enough

Spa salons are generally cleaned and maintain high hygienic standards. However, beauty salons can sometimes fail to meet hygiene expectations. A nice salon on the outside can practice inadequate cleanliness procedures. If you don’t want to catch anything nasty from a fungal infection to hepatitis, you need to keep your eyes open to spot the warning signs. Take a close look at the technicians as they work. The tools inside their storage tray should be completely spotless. Additionally, if technicians don’t seem focused on their job, they are more likely to make costly mistakes. A salon that doesn’t use a liner in their foot bath can put clients at risk of exposure of bacteria.

#3. The technician skipped the skin patch test

If you booked an appointment for a semi-permanent or permanent makeup procedure, you should expect the technician to perform a skin test. A patch test takes no more than a few minutes and can avoid many issues. The test needs to happen 48 hours before your appointment – typically the mixture will be applied behind the ear or at the crook of the elbow. While this might be annoying because you can’t have a last minute beauty treatment, it also ensures that you don’t experience any allergic reaction or lasting symptoms from your exposure to chemicals. If, for instance, you wake up with your eyes swollen after an eyelash tint where you didn’t receive any patch test, you need to find personal injury attorneys providing experienced legal help. You could lose your eyesight because your technician got too lazy to do a test!

#4. Sometimes being too relaxed is bad for you

A spa treatment is releasing endorphins directly into your bloodstream, which is why it makes you feel happy and de-stressed. The massage and the aromatherapy, which tend to be part of traditional treatment, can help your body to release tensions. While there’s nothing wrong with being relaxed, it’s a bad idea to drive immediately after your spa appointment. Your body and mind are not in a position to cope with hectic and busy traffic.

#5. Avoid spa baths if you’ve got a heart condition

The best part of a spa afternoon is when you can chill in a hot tub. Some spa centers even provide a drink on the side! Hot tubs and saunas are soothing after a long week. But, they can be the death of you if you’ve got a heart condition as they put too much pressure on your cardiovascular system. There are some signs to be aware of, such as feeling dizzy or nauseous. Your heart rate is likely to increase, which can lead to severe issues. The key to staying safe: Stay in warm water and avoid hot temperatures.

#6. Poorly timed, it could be a terrible experience

It’s not uncommon to book a beauty appointment before a big event. But if you want to look your best, you need to plan it carefully. Facial treatments are likely to encourage your skin to release toxins. While it’s not a health scare per se, it’s important to note that your skin might not immediately clear up after the treatment. Indeed, things might go worse before they get better.

#7. Facial and skin treatments don’t work if you’re on meds

Last but not least, some medications can affect the way your skin reacts to beauty and care products. For instance, birth control pills can make your skin more vulnerable to outbreaks. Antihistamines can increase rashes and inflammation, which can turn out ugly if you’re doing a facial.

Can a spa day make you feel beautiful and relaxed? Not always! If you’re not careful, you can end up with unexpected health complications. Remember ladies, safety first when it comes to beauty.

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
