The Shoestring Gentleman

There has been a certain myth circulating for a few years now, a myth that states you can’t dress like a gentleman without spending a small fortune. Well, that is nonsense. Looking in the mirror and feeling like a million dollars can be done on a shoestring, it is just about knowing what to wear, what is in fashion and what the current trends are. Sure, a Prada suit worn with a pair of Jimmy Choo’s will turn heads, but no one is going to know who or what you are wearing unless you take each item off, turn them inside out, straighten the label so it’s easier to see and then hang them on the back of your chair.

A gentleman’s fashion is all about fit, and that is a crucial rule to always adhere to. If it doesn’t fit, then don’t bother. Another golden rule is about being timeless. Think Paul Newman, Jack Nicholson, and Sean Connery. These gentlemen didn’t adhere to passing trends, they dressed timelessly, and that goes a huge way in making someone look impeccable, regardless of how much money you make after tax. However, dressing for work is one thing. Dressing for a night out or the weekend is different. So let’s break it down for you.

So let’s start with your weekend wear.

It’s all about layers. The more layers – within reason – the more stylish you will look. But let’s go from the toe and work up. Chelsea boots are a must-have item for every gentleman. Not boat shoes or Dr Martens, Chelsea boots. They are timeless. The pair these with a nice pair of dark jeans that fit well. They don’t have to be expensive. So visit some of the more affordable men’s clothing stores and see what they have in a straight leg. As for the top half, always go with a well-ironed, white shirt and tuck it in. Gentlemen tuck in shirts, the cast of Jersey Shore don’t. As for layers, we recommend you think British, something that would work in both the city and in the countryside, like The Spencer Cardigan by Ross Barr. Then have a nice coat to top it all off, a thick duffle coat or a nice peacoat. Remember, layers and fit.

Time to impress at work

If you work in an environment where you can wear a suit, then wear a suit. The reason for this is simple, you should always dress like you’re in the job you want to be in, not the job you are actually in. It will boost your self-esteem and help you get to that desired place in your career. So get a nice navy suit that fits on the shoulders, arms and waist. When you try it on, try doing up the top-button. If that works, then it’s good; the top button is the only button you should ever do up. A nice shirt with pale stripes should be next, and a tie that subtly pops. Maybe it is a strong colour, or a thick tie, or an interesting texture; it doesn’t matter. It just needs to have a little hint of something special. Shoes, always go with brogues. As for watches, well, the world is your oyster nowadays because there are a million nice-looking watches available for not a lot of money.

Heading Out For Drinks

Feeling comfortable in what you are wearing is the key to feeling confident, and confidence is the best thing you wear. So push the boat out a little bit, but not so far that you feel self-conscious. Maybe you could team a blazer with a low roll neck and a smart pair of jeans. Don’t ruin it with trainers though. A pair of smart leather shoes, or even your Chelsea boots, will be perfect. If you’re the kind of person that can get away with wearing a pendant, then try it. They may not be classically smart, but some of the men’s jewelry nowadays is very cool. If not, then just stick with a watch, something with a few more dials than your work watch, a little bit more pizzazz, and why not adopt a nice signet ring, something understated, something that says old money. You’ll be drinking cocktails in a bar that is trying to be trendy, so it is okay to add a little something that will grab people’s attention. At work, you want to be to see you dress well without them thinking you tried to dress well. At drinks, the same rule goes, but you have more freedom to play with, so enjoy that freedom a little bit.

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
