7 Tips For Hosting A Party So You Have Time With Guests

February 8, 2017 Rachel Ferrucci 15 Comments

This post brought to you by Glad. The content and opinions expressed below are that of Tools 2 Tiaras.

I love to entertain and have parties, from small intimate dinners to a house full of people. I enjoy spending time with my guests rather than being a “server”. To make sure I’m able to do this I have 7 Tips For Hosting A Party So You Have Time With Guests. When you follow these tips it also makes it less stressful before, during, and after the gathering.

  1. Lists are your friend! Creating complete lists will allow you to check everything off as you go and stay organized. Your guest list is a no-brainer, you should also have a menu list and a cleaning list. From these you will create your shopping and prep list.
    • Menu List- This should contain everything you will serve from appetizers to all your drinks and don’t forget condiments. Once this is complete, you now create a shopping list. You will include every ingredient that you will use. Example: If you’re serving shrimp cocktail, on your shopping list, you’ll write- shrimp, lemon, lettuce, ketchup, horseradish. Once your shopping list is complete, you’ll go through and mark what you have at home and what you need to buy. Don’t forget about any garnishes for foods or drinks.
    • Prep List- Look at your menu and decide what platters, bowls, or dishes you will be using. Add your serving utensils (spatula, large spoon, tongs, and so on) as well as side dishes or bowls for dips or condiments. Next check on paper goods. There are times when I use a heavy paper plate, plastic cups and silverware. Check toilet paper, paper towels, garbage bags, napkins, plastic wrap, and aluminum foil. Decide on what linens you’ll be using and if there are decorative towels you want in your bathroom or kitchen.
    • Cleaning list- I’m sure you’re thinking you know what you have to clean but if you create a list it will help you to stay on track and you won’t be rushing around the day of the party. Two days before you should do your heavily cleaning (floors, dusting, mirrors, refrigerator, etc) This is also the day you should be doing your shopping.
    • Cooking List- Write all the foods that need to be cooked or heated, at what temperature, and for how long. I tape this inside a cabinet that is right by the oven. This makes less thinking the day of the party. I also have all my pans and baking sheets ready. menu list
  2. Party Prep The Day Before – The day before your party cook and prep as much food as you could. Do any last minute cleaning which should be very light since you cleaned the day before. Be sure to have extra hand towels and toilet paper in the bathroom. If you’ll be moving any furniture, tables, or chairs, this is when you should do it. Get out any linens for tables and have them ready to go.
  3. Self Service and Pre-made drinks – Set up a drink station. Have all your glasses ready according to what your serving. Instead of serving many different cocktails, have one specialty cocktail and try to mix a batch large enough so guests can serve themselves. If serving wine, have glasses and a wine opener ready. drink station
  4. Apps and Buffet – Keep things simple and think about serving different appetizers and serve buffet style. Allowing guests to serve themselves leaves more time for you to mingle.
  5. Party Prep Day Of Party- The day of the party get your table ready with linens and place your platters, bowls, and dishes where they will go on the table. Look at your menu list and write each dish on a piece of paper and put it on the platter. If food is already prepped on it’s serving dish and in the refrigerator, be sure to have it written and make a place for it on the table. You will be filling your kitchen garbage can quickly so you need to be prepared. We always used the outdoor black bags because the last thing I wanted was a busted bag and need to clean up during my party but there is now Glad KitchenPro trash bags available at Target. The Glad KitchenPro trash bags have double bag protection with 5 day odor control thanks to Febreze odor neutralization. Place a few bags at the bottom of your garbage can and then open one and place as you normally do. This saves time, when you  take the garbage bag out, you can simply reach down and pop open another bag! It’s all about saving time. table setting
  6. Music – You can either create a playlist before hand or check your TV for a music channel. Remember to keep the volume low, you’re not a night club and you want your guests to be able to hear each other when talking.
  7. Clean Up – There are always a few friends that want to help clean up. If they start helping, be thankful and accept it! You are probably ready to plop on the couch or head to bed but take the extra hour to wash the dishes or pack the dishwasher. If all you have to do the next day is put clean dishes away, you will be very happy. friends at christmas

Love this. I always hesitate when it comes to hosting because I am always so busy cooking or making sure everything is ready to actually spend time with my guests.

These are great tips. I love hosting parties, but I hate it when I can’t hang with my friends.

This is something that anyone who loves to throw parties needs to read. Parties are fun, but when you host, it can be hard to actually be a PART of the party.

My mom loves hosting parties, however, she prefers small parties, like family only, or “friends” only. I love how you decorated your table and mini bar! I would probably draw inspiration from this post when I get to host a party at home.

I love when friends help clean up!! These are good tips, esp. the one about not making the music too loud! I don’t like to say ‘what’ a hundred times during a conversation.

Having premade drinks is a great idea. That would really save time instead of having to mix up drinks for guests,

These are some great tips. I am more of an introvert so I usually go to things instead of hosting.

This is great advice! I tend to get overwhelmed when I start planning all of the meals and apps. I should make more lists!

Great tips! I love the idea of a drink station. I also like to do finger foods and stuff that doesn’t take much prep work. It’s more fun to mingle than have to check on the food all night long.

These are such great ideas to help you plan and enjoy your own party. We used to have parties but lately we are afraid that people and kids will wreck our house so we have avoided it. Your platters and serving tables look so professional.

Why did no one warn us that menopause would turn our bodies into a crime scene… Dryness. Pain. Sneezing roulette. UTIs showing up uninvited. And doctors smiling politely and saying, “That’s just aging.” Cool. Love that for us.

Say Hello to Silky Peach Cream 🍑 A bioidentical estriol cream that works locally to rebuild thinning tissue, restore moisture, and bring back comfort where it actually matters. Not a Band-Aid. Not a $350 prescription. Not a lube that disappears by lunchtime.

Estriol is the gentlest form of estrogen our bodies naturally make, and Silky Peach Cream puts it back exactly where menopause took it away. Over time, tissue rebuilds, moisture returns, and suddenly intimacy doesn’t feel like sandpaper and regret.

Two pumps nightly. Then maintenance. Because it took years to get this dry… it’s okay if it takes a little time to feel normal again.

I’m done whispering about menopause. I got my life back. And my peach is happy again!

I didn’t expect this to be the hardest part of getting older.

If sex hurts. If you avoid intimacy. If you dread wiping.

It’s not “just dryness.” It’s estrogen loss. And yes, it’s fixable.

Menopause doesn’t ease in quietly. It shows up hot, uncomfortable, and disruptive. And for way too long, women are told to whisper about it or accept it as “just aging.” I’m done with that.

Silky Peach Cream helped restore moisture, rebuild thinning tissue, and bring back comfort where menopause took it away. Not a quick fix. Not a Band-Aid. Just real, gradual relief that made me feel like myself again.

Two pumps. Some patience. And a lot less suffering.

Stop whispering about menopause. You deserve relief. You deserve joy. Your peach deserves to be happy again.

Get the details and try it for yourself at the link in my bio.

When I found out I needed surgery, my 1st thought wasn’t the procedure. It was the fear of being handed opioids again with no real choice. After my last surgery, opioids were the only option I had, my insurance didn’t cover the non-opioid alternatives I specifically asked for. That showed me how quickly exposure can happen. Many people don’t realize that about 1 in 10 patients who receive opioids after surgery will struggle with long-term use. That’s nearly 4 million people per year. It’s no secret that opioids can lead to addiction, & we should be much louder about the fact that there are non opioid options that can be used during surgery to manage pain afterwards.
Medicare already recognizes this & separately reimburses for FDA-approved non-opioid pain treatments, proving these options are real & available. Yet insurance barriers often make them difficult or impossible to access. Instead of making decisions about my recovery with my doctor, insurance policy made them for me. As I prepare for my next surgery, I want access to every option that reduces my exposure. I know how easily things can escalate. I’ve seen opioid use continue far longer than intended. It can tear apart families before anyone realizes what’s happening. What starts as short-term pain management after surgery becomes something no one ever expected, simply because safer options were never offered. It’s frustrating that some major insurers still haven’t expanded coverage the way Medicare has. #UnitedHealthcare is one of the companies whose restrictions make it harder to access FDA-approved non-opioid surgical pain options. Because of their size, these decisions affect millions. Surgery shouldn’t be a gateway to opioid addiction. Medicare covers these options. UnitedHealthcare & others need to do the same so patients aren’t pushed toward opioids by outdated policies. Patients & families deserve better.
