Hair Care Tips That Every Man In His 40s Has Been Waiting For

December 7, 2016 Rachel Ferrucci 1 Comment

Beauty and fashion magazines have taken a huge interest in hair care and hair styling over the past decades. Unfortunately, this interest tends to be very woman-focused and leaves men wondering when the fashion industry will decide to look at them. Men too face hair problems that relate to greasiness, product build-up, hair scarceness, and much more and that can turn devastating with age. The search for the perfect barber is a difficult one for men in their 40s, and while we can’t promise to help you find the perfect spot to get you next hair cut, we can give you tips to keep your hair and scalp healthy until then.

Back To Basics With The Egg Wash

You may wonder about cracking an omelette on your scalp, but it is scientifically proven that egg protein is hugely beneficial for your hair. The egg yolk contains a protein called lecithin, which is a very potent emulsifier. Its role? It’s simple: As you wash your hair, the lecithin emulsifies the oil with water and then you can rinse it out. If you think this is a grandmother’s remedy, think again. An egg wash is excellent for thin, fine, or oily hair to provide it with a new strength and give all the body and texture that you need. The list of benefits is still long: Packed with plenty of vitamins, including biotin which is often referred to as the hair growth vitamins, and pantothenic acid, which is a favorite of shampoo advertising too. In short, a quick egg wash makes your hair look visibly shinier, and genuinely healthier too as there is none of the harmful detergents and preservatives that you find in regular shampoos. This is not a homemade shampoo that you want to revert to too regularly, but once a fortnight or a month is a great guideline for egg hair wash.

Take Care Of Thinning Hair To Avoid Hair Loss

With age, as they reach their late thirties to mid-forties, men’s hair can become thinner and even scarce. For some this translates into a visible bald patch, for others this remains manageable but requires clever brushing and positioning of the hair. If you are among the unlucky men who are experiencing a form of hair loss, don’t panic: 50% of men experience some degree of male pattern baldness by the time they hit their fifties. For many, the cause is hormonal, as the testosterone morphs with age into a hormone that attacks the hair follicles. Admittedly knowing the root of the problem is not guaranteed to make you feel better about it. However, there are already a palette of solutions to prevent and reduce the devastating process of baldness and hair loss: Treatments such as the finasteride 1mg tablets are designed to limit the effect of the morphed hormone on hair follicles, or you can choose to opt for a local application of minoxidil which is designed to reinvigorate the attacked hair follicles. You want to stay away from caffeine shampoos which have no impact at all on the morphed testosterone.

Finally, as a last resort, you can turn to surgery for a follicular unit extraction, which is a long process of moving hair one-by-one from the back of your hair to the front.

Get A Professional Opinion

There is no age to have a trendy and elegant hairstyle, assuming that you naturally stick within the borders of your age and hair texture. Even if you don’t find the right barber for your hair, every salon, even if they receive more female clients than male, will be able to advise you on the right care products for your hair. But what they can do too is give thinning hair a refreshing haircut that will help you come better with the problem of potential bald patches. Additionally, it is important to get your hair cut and styled regularly by a professional as this helps you monitor the health of your hair. Stress, dirty air con at work, or unhealthy food can show in the health of your hair and your scalp, and therefore makes factors such as dandruff, greasy hair, or hair breakage evolve as your lifestyle changes. Little tips such as daily brushing, even for short hair, and avoiding to rub dry  your hair in a towel can already help keep your hair smooth and strong. Remember that when it comes to hair, every little help matters!

I find that the use of a good tea tree oil shampoo is good for getting rid of product build up. I think that a lot of the same rules apply for both men and women. Keep any heat styling to a minimum, keep up with regular trims to get rid of any split ends, and to eat a well balanced diet as your hair will benefit from that. If you are experiencing hair loss, I would recommend seeing a dermatologist just to ensure nothing else is going on. Great tips, thanks for sharing!

I didn’t realize how much poor sleep was affecting my trips… until I fixed it.

Waking up tired, adjusting to new places, different beds, time zones… it adds up fast.

Traveling with the AirMini changed that for me. It’s compact, simple, and makes it easy to stay consistent no matter where I am.

Now I actually feel like I’m experiencing my trips, not just getting through them.

Check it out at the link in my bio.

#ad No one tells you that your skin doesn’t just “age”… it changes.

Dryness, dullness, fine lines, that crepey texture… it’s not just time. It’s hormonal.

I kept layering on creams thinking I just needed something “better,” but nothing was actually addressing what was going on underneath.

M4 from @myalloy is different. It’s prescription skincare made specifically for hormonal skin, using topical estriol to help restore collagen, hydration, and elasticity right where your skin needs it.

It doesn’t enter your bloodstream. It works at the skin level. And honestly… it just makes sense.
