How To Make Sure Your Child Has College Money With Connecticut Higher Education Trust (CHET)

May 17, 2016 Rachel Ferrucci Leave a Comment

GraduationWe make sure our children have everything they need from the day they’re born. As they grow we buy new clothes for the season, grocery shop to make sure they have food, and all necessities they need to get through each day. Children grow so fast and before you know it their kindergarten graduation hat has turned into their high school graduation cap and gown. mom and toddler

This most exciting time can also be stressful. College can be expensive and can put our children into debt the minute they enter the school. Saving for college can be very difficult and when the day comes we wish we were able to start many years before. Connecticut Higher Education Trust (CHET), Connecticut’s 529 College Saving Plan makes it possible for parents to start a college fund.

This May we are celebrating 5/29 with CHET. All throughout the month of May CHET is offering a chance to enter to win one of three prizes. Grand prize is a $1,529 CHET contribution and two runner-up prizes of a $529 CHET contribution.

CHETWhat is CHET?

The Connecticut Higher Education Trust (CHET) is Connecticut’s 529 college savings plan.
CHET works like a Roth Retirement account, your contributions grow tax free along the way, and are tax-free when you use the money for college. The money can be used for an accredited college or university in the country, and some abroad. It can be used for tuition, room & board, computer, any supplies required by the school, etc.

Why CHET?

CT taxpayers recieve a CT state tax deduction on the contributions you make to CHET each year, up to $10K for joint filers and $5K for single filers.

If your child gets a scholarship, CHET makes it easy to roll the money over to another child.

GraduationWhy grandparents should get involved?

As grandparents we know the stress this bill can put on a family and we can now add money to our grandchild’s CHET account. This is perfect for holidays, birthdays, or a surprise. Aunts and uncles can also add to it so it’s an easy way to start a college fund!

Get Free Money For Your Baby!

CHET BABY SCHOLARS: The state of Connecticut wants every child to be able to go to college. Every child born in Connecticut is eligible to receive up to $250 in CHET contributions to get their college savings started. The account must be opened within the child’s first year to participate. Spread the word!

GraduationAbout CHET

CHET is managed by TIAA-CREF Tuition Financing. Inc., a national college savings plan leader that manages ten state-sponsored 529 plans across the country. CHET is offered through the Office of Connecticut State Treasurer Denise L. Nappier

Bottom Line

It takes a village to raise a child!

This is a perfect opportunity to start a CHET savings for the children in your family. If the child is under one years old, they get $250 and if not, they still have a chance of winning money to be added into their account throughout the month of May.

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
