5 Tips for Organizing a Shared Closet with Your Significant Other

January 21, 2021 Rachel Ferrucci

Maintaining an organized closet can be a difficult task, more so if it is shared. Sharing a closet comes with the challenge of mixing two wardrobes, personalities, and numerous pairs of shoes, all in limited space. It may sound stressful, but it is achievable with a little planning and creativity. Below, we have outlined a few tips on organizing a closet that you share with your significant other.

1.      Declutter

The secret to keeping your shared closet organized is limiting what goes inside it. Before you start negotiating with your partner over who gets the upper shelves in the closet, it is essential to cut down on the stuff that you store inside it. You can arrange your items into categories, i.e. Shoes, clothes, costumes, accessories, tools, etc., and sort them one by one. Donate any item you feel is no longer part of your style or don’t regularly wear.

2.      Organize Together

Even if cleaning and organizing aren’t part of your partner’s hobbies, it is essential that you work as a team while organizing your shared closet. As you do this, discuss the items you regularly wear, your dressing habits, and morning routines. Doing this will help you determine how much space each of you needs within the closet and where to store certain items, especially those you regularly use. Focus on organizing your closet in a way that will make it easy for both of you to dress, especially if you often do it at the same time.

3.    Store Items That Are Off-Season Elsewhere

Some items, especially in women’s clothing, are only utilized within a particular season. There is, therefore, no need to have them cluttering your closet when they may not be in use again until the next year. Limit the front and center of your closet to items that you both wear every day. You can then store seasonal items in your coat closet or a bin, which you can place under the bed.

4.   Use Labeled Storage Boxes

If you are running low on space within the drawers or shelves, you can store small items such as scarves, belts, shoes, and hats in storage baskets and boxes. Ensure that you label the boxes for easy identification. Alternatively, you can use different color codes for each person’s boxes so that it is easy to find an item, especially when getting ready for work.  Additionally, you may use coordinating hangers to avoid visual clutter inside your closet. Select a distinctive color for yourself and a contrasting one for your significant other.

5.      Have a Place for Dirty Laundry

No matter how small your closet may seem, it is important to designate an area for dirty laundry. Have a hamper or laundry basket where you and your partner can store your dirty clothes. Doing this will help to ensure that you don’t end up having piles of dirty clothes on your closet floor. It will also go a long way in reducing arguments, which helps to keep your relationship strong.

With these tips, you should have an organized closet, which you share harmoniously with your better half.

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
