Getting an animal is a big decision and should be thought about before jumping into it. We love kittens, or any baby animal for that matter, but they need constant care and love and they will be a part of your family for a long time. Your kitten may also need to be trained and this takes patience and time. Most people think cats take care of themselves and don’t require training but this is not true. Cats love to jump and you may not want them on your kitchen counters or table. They also love to scratch and if you have furniture, they will see it as the perfect place to sharpen their claws (it’s a natural instinct). Here are 5 tips for bringing a new kitty home that will help you both transition! 

1. Take It Slow-The first couple weeks should be to get to know each other. The kitten will need to get used to its new surroundings and a new routine. It’s a good idea to keep using the same food as the shelter did, so you’re not changing everything for the new kitten. You can always introduce the new food at a later time. Having company should be kept at a minimum for the first week or two to allow kitty some time to make himself comfortable in his new home.
2. Your New Kitten -This is now your baby and you want to make sure he is safe. Make sure there are no harmful chemicals or plants around that can harm him. You’ll also need to make an appointment with your vet to have them checked and to meet each other. This should be done even if all his shots are up to date by the shelter.
3. What You’ll Need – A cat carrier, food and water bowls, cat food, litter box, litter (Fresh Step® Compact Packs), litter scooper, toys, collar with name tag, scratching post, brush, and you also may want to add a cat bed.
4. Find A Private Place-The litter box should be placed in a quiet place. Cats like their privacy and they are also very picky about cleanliness. The box should be cleaned daily of solids and depending on how often your cat goes you’ll need to scoop every other day. The litter should be completely changed at least once a week.
5. Changing the cat litter could be back breaking. The 38 Lb box is difficult to pick up and it’s hard to manage as you try to pour it into the box.
