4 Tips To Keep Your Teenager Safe Behind the Wheel

January 9, 2022 Rachel Ferrucci

Buying your kids’ first car is a rite of passage for them and for your entire family. While most households go through this important moment, it doesn’t mean that it is an easy one for parents – and for more than a reason! Just in 2019, over 2,400 drivers below the age of 20 were killed in road accidents, and nearly 260,000 teen drivers were treated in emergency rooms in the US.

At the same time, driving a car is important for every teenager to move freely between home and school, secure their first job, and gain the independence they desire. Luckily, there is a lot you can do to keep your teenagers safe when behind the wheel without restricting their freedom.

Invest in a Safer Car

Whether your kid is getting ready to go to college or looking to find their first job, they will need a car. In most cases, you, as a parent, will be responsible for financing their first vehicle. So, you can also choose what car is right for them. Undoubtedly, you might want to keep your costs low. However, there are some tips to keep in mind to keep expenses within your budget while keeping your teen safe:

  • Review a car’s safety measures before investing in a certain model
  • Used cars can be a valid option, but you should make sure to buy them from a certified dealer
  • Make sure warranties cover any potential damage
  • Some small cars with reduced speed limits are specially designed for first-time drivers
  • Be mindful of mileage and fuel efficiency standards

Make Sure They Understand the Importance of Road Safety

Driving courses are something that every teenager needs to go through to earn their license. However, in most cases, these courses are not so highly efficient in preparing your kids for what might happen on the road.

Indeed, driving courses are a great starting point to understand how a vehicle works and what are the road rules. But it is only with experience, focus, road wisdom, and skills that drivers can avoid accidents and crushes.

Luckily, there are several courses and training alternatives you might consider for your kids to learn expert driving skills, including advanced driving courses and driver’s awareness courses. Check for national programs and local initiatives to find the right one for your needs.

Invest in the Right Insurance

With the precautions above, you can help your teen avoid severe road accidents and injuries. At the same time, inexperienced drivers are more likely to scratch their cars or damage their vehicles. You can prevent financial losses of breakdowns and major repairs, and avoid significant medical costs by investing in comprehensive insurance policies, such as Cars Protection Plus.

Be a Role Model

It is important to keep in mind that your kids will learn a lot from you and your attitude on the road. So, you should do your best to be a mindful, respectful, and aware driver throughout your life, so that your kids can learn the right basics of how to safely be on the road.

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
