3 Tips for Being More Effective in Everyday Life

July 25, 2020 Rachel Ferrucci

There are various things which everyone wants out of everyday life, more or less regardless of what their specific goals, dreams, or visions might be.

For one thing, everyone wants to be happy and contented. For another thing, everyone wants to have meaningful relationships, and to be acknowledged by their peers.

It’s perhaps also true that everyone – at some level – simply wants to be “effective” in life, in general. Meaning that they want to be able to reliably achieve their dreams, impact the world around them, and act in ways that yield results.

Here are a few tips for being more effective in everyday life.

  • Do more reading in your free time

These days, the most common forms of entertainment that people are likely to indulge in when they have a bit of free time, will tend to be things like watching films and TV shows (either on Netflix, or on conventional channels), watching YouTube videos, and so on.

While there’s nothing wrong with these pastimes, they do have the tendency to be extremely time-consuming. They also tend to give you a very shallow insight into a lot of different things, instead of giving you the kinds of broader and deeper insights that can really tend to make you more effective in everyday life.

One great way of deepening your focus and understanding of various topics, is to simply do more reading in your free time. This might involve reading articles such as DTSS.us Four US Constitutions, and it might involve reading practical non-fiction books. But it can also involve reading novels, too. A good novel will easily boost your imagination, and benefit your cognitive abilities in various ways.

  • Develop the skill of focusing on one thing at a time

In his highly acclaimed book, “Deep Work,” the author and computer scientist Cal Newport argues that one of the major problems with the world today – especially the working world today – is that it encourages people to do what he calls “shallow work.”

To cut a long story short, “shallow work” is essentially the kind of work that can be done without a high degree of focus – and Newport argues that it’s this type of work that will increasingly be taken over by AI systems and machines in the near future.

The best way, according to Newport, of becoming more effective in work and in life is to develop the skill of doing “Deep Work.” In other words, develop the skill of focusing on one thing at a time, without interruption, for long periods.

  • Find regular moments for “silence”

The famous Norwegian polar explorer, Erling Kagge, believes that one of the most important things for both personal effectiveness and also personal well-being, is regular periods of “Silence.”

By “Silence,” Kagge isn’t just referring to the literal absence of noise. Instead, he’s talking about regular moments spent without anything much to absorb your attention at all, so that your mind has a chance to still and relax.

Practicing meditation is one well-known technique for finding a bit of “Silence,” and it seems to have certain potentially striking benefits, too.

In any case, turn down the noise from time to time.

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
