It’s often said that Playa del Carmen is a vibrant destination in the Riviera Maya, and I can confirm this from my own experience. From the very first moment until the last, being there generates positive feelings that are hard to explain—better experienced by taking the plunge and going.
Now, many make the smart decision to choose this as their destination. After all, we’re talking about a place known for its paradisiacal beaches and great atmosphere, perfect for a vacation.
However, a common mistake is missing out on the different ways to enjoy Playa del Carmen beyond the basics. If you’re planning a visit and don’t know what to do but want to create an itinerary to make the most of your vacation, read on carefully.
El Camaleón at Mayakoba
Did you know there’s a golf course in the area? Probably not, because I had no idea either when I first arrived. But it does exist, and it’s called El Camaleón Mayakoba. This world-class golf course is located in the exclusive Mayakoba community in the Riviera Maya, near Playa del Carmen.
Designed by legendary golfer Greg Norman, this golf course is renowned for its natural beauty and innovative design. Its name, which means chameleon in English, reflects its changing landscape, including mangroves, tropical jungles, waterways, and stunning views of the Caribbean Sea.
The 18-hole course, which stretches over just more than 6 kilometers, offers a challenging experience for players of all levels, strategically combining nature and technical design.
Additionally, due to its harmonious integration with the natural environment and promotion of local flora and fauna conservation, it is one of the few golf courses in the world certified as a nature sanctuary by Audubon International, making it even more interesting.
Beaches of Playa del Carmen
Sometimes people, including myself, mistakenly think Playa del Carmen is just one beach and nothing more, when in fact, it boasts several beaches along its stretch. Trying to visit most, if not all, of them would be a challenge, but it’s a challenge that will elevate your vacation experience.
Its beautiful beaches offer a paradisiacal setting ideal for relaxing and enjoying the sun. Some of the most well-known include Mamitas Beach and Punta Esmeralda Beach, each with its own charm and appeal.
In my case, I visited both. Mamitas Beach captivates you with its charming atmosphere, beach clubs providing live music, refreshing drinks, and water activities. In contrast, Punta Esmeralda Beach is quieter and more family-oriented, with a beautiful natural cenote that flows into the sea, creating a perfect spot for swimming and adventurous exploration.
Frida Kahlo Riviera Maya Museum
Frida Kahlo is a name that resonates throughout Mexico, so it’s no surprise to find references to her in various places, including a museum in the area. Located in the heart of Playa del Carmen, this museum is a vibrant and colorful tribute to the life and work of the iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
Opened in 2017, the museum is strategically situated on the famous Quinta Avenida, making it a must-visit cultural stop for tourists strolling through this lively area. Through both permanent and temporary exhibitions, the museum offers an immersive experience that celebrates Frida Kahlo’s resilience and creativity.
The best part is that the Museo Frida Kahlo Riviera Maya not only displays reproductions of the artist’s most famous works but also provides historical and personal context through a series of multimedia resources, documents, and personal belongings.
Like me, everyone who takes the time to visit will be able to explore the different stages of Frida’s life, from her childhood and the physical challenges she faced after her accident to her tumultuous relationship with the equally famous muralist Diego Rivera.
Taking a Dip
This might sound obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people go to the beaches in the area just to sit. There’s nothing wrong with that, but missing the opportunity to take a dip in the water is a shame, at least in my opinion.
There’s nothing like diving into the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean, especially considering the beaches in the area, which, as we know, are wonderful in their own right.
Moreover, the waters are usually quite calm, making them suitable for swimmers of all levels, even for those who don’t know how to swim, as they pose no danger.
Also, as it is part of my responsibility, I suggest that you place the children in flotation devices, and that neither you nor they exceed the safety limit área, and, be aware of jellyfish alerts, which sometimes occur on the beaches. The idea is to have a great time, and not to have problems or have a bad time.
Relaxing in the Shade
As I mentioned, swimming is great, but I didn’t mean to imply it’s the only thing to do, so don’t get me wrong. Sitting in the shade is another fantastic way to enjoy your vacation in Playa del Carmen.
There are excellent options for resting in the shade after a day of various activities or a long stint at the beach. Many resorts and beaches provide palm umbrellas and Balinese beds on the beach for this purpose.
Similarly, you can find shaded areas in nearby parks, like Parque Fundadores, where you can simply read a good book, chat with your companions, observe the surroundings, or let yourself be carried away by the breeze. It’s all up to you.
Visiting Parque Fundadores
Speaking of Parque Fundadores, I recommend it as another activity because it’s an iconic spot in Playa del Carmen, situated near the sea. Here you’ll find a large sculpture called the Portal Maya, as well as recreational areas and a stage for cultural and musical events.
It’s a great alternative to consider for strolling, taking photos, and enjoying local life, as it will positively enhance your experience.
Taking Tours in the Area
Exploring the area is another way to get to know the surroundings, so consider taking a snorkeling tour of the nearby coral reefs, a boat tour to observe dolphins, or an adventure excursion on an ATV.
Tours to cenotes and the jungle also offer unique experiences you won’t want to miss. I almost didn’t have time for these, but I eventually found a slot to join in, and what a great decision it was! So, give it a try—you won’t regret it.
Enjoying the Nightlife
If you’ve done a bit of research on this destination, you’ve probably read that Quinta Avenida is the heart of nightlife, and it truly is. With numerous bars, nightclubs, and restaurants offering live music and entertainment, it’s the place to be at night.
Don’t miss the festive atmosphere and the famous beach parties organized at various spots along the coast. Just ask around and join in, especially if you’re traveling solo or with friends, because doing this can help you meet people to party with in the most unexpected ways.
Exploring Quinta Avenida
Quinta Avenida is one thing at night and another during the day, as during the latter, it is the center of commercial and social life in Playa del Carmen. Here you’ll find a wide variety of shops, from luxury boutiques to local crafts.
Additionally, the avenue is lined with restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy a meal or a drink while watching the hustle and bustle of the place, which is part of its charm.
Tasting Local Cuisine
From fresh seafood to traditional Mexican food, there’s something for everyone, so there’s no excuse to just eat at the hotel or opt for fast food. Try tacos al pastor, fresh ceviches, or a dinner at a gourmet restaurant, as each place has its own essence.
The variety of options will allow you to explore unique flavors and enjoy an unforgettable culinary experience, which your palate will surely appreciate.
Remember that part of getting to know a vacation spot is tasting its food, ideally the most local dishes, so that its culture reaches your palate. Even if you don’t like it, Mexican food is generally delicious, so there’s no real loss in trying.
Engaging in Water Sports
Besides swimming, Playa del Carmen is ideal for practicing water sports. You can try paddle surfing, kite surfing, or jet skiing. The calm waters and extensive beaches provide a perfect environment to enjoy these exciting activities.
Among the options I mentioned, I was drawn to jet skiing. Although I hesitated at first, I eventually gave it a try, and I only regret not doing it sooner!
This is to let you know that while some people are immediately attracted to these sports, others are pushed out of their comfort zones. However, stepping out of your comfort zone has its benefits.
Relaxing at a Spa
For a day of complete relaxation, visit one of the many spas that Playa del Carmen offers. Many resorts and hotels have spa services that include massages, facials, and relaxation therapies.
It’s the perfect opportunity to pamper yourself and recharge during your stay. If you decide to visit a hotel spa, go for the Occidental Xcaret Resort, whether you’re staying there or not, as they excel in this service.
I can’t recommend it enough because I decided to spend my last three days in Playa del Carmen staying at this hotel, and I wish I had done so from the beginning. The photos on their website don’t do it justice—it’s spectacular, and their spa is equally amazing, so consider it.
If you like it enough to stay there, book in advance, especially during the high season, as rooms fill up quickly. Once you’re there, explore all its spaces because they offer so much to their guests. You can easily spend an entire day in this hotel, enjoying its various areas.
Visiting Nearby Sites
Playa del Carmen is surrounded by several interesting places that are worth visiting. If you’re staying for several days, venture a bit beyond the area to explore wonderful places like the ones mentioned below:
Tulum
Who hasn’t heard of Tulum? Famous for its Mayan ruins situated on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea, this destination perfectly combines history and beach appeal.
Walking around the archaeological site and then descending to the beach for a refreshing dip in turquoise waters is an unforgettable experience. Additionally, Tulum has nearby cenotes and a vibrant bohemian vibe in its hotel zone.
Cozumel
A nearby island known for its impressive diving and snorkeling spots is Cozumel, which you can reach by ferry from Playa del Carmen. The ferry ride itself is interesting and fun, especially if you go with company.
Cozumel offers a unique opportunity to explore the second largest coral reef in the world, as well as enjoy its white sandy beaches and relaxed atmosphere. Because let’s face it, you can never have too much beach and relaxation.
Cenote Xcaret
A spectacular cenote within the Xcaret eco-archaeological park is the first thing you’ll encounter if you visit this place, which is ideal for swimming and underground exploration.
Xcaret also offers a variety of activities and cultural shows that immerse you in Mexico’s rich heritage, from swimming with dolphins to night shows celebrating the country’s history and traditions.
Chichén Itzá
It’s about a two-hour drive, which might not sound immediately appealing, but the ruins of Chichén Itzá are a must-see for those wanting to visit one of the wonders of the ancient world.
This archaeological site, a UNESCO World Heritage site, features the famous pyramid of Kukulkán and other iconic buildings of the Mayan civilization. The visit can be complemented with a stop in Valladolid, a charming nearby colonial city.
As is evident, enjoying Playa del Carmen can be a varied and enriching experience, full of activities that cater to all tastes. From exploring ancient Mayan ruins and immersing yourself in the underground nature of cenotes to enjoying paradisiacal beaches and engaging in water sports, Playa del Carmen and its surroundings offer a diversity that makes it a safe and attractive travel destination.
