Walt Disney is an icon and when you hear the stories about his personality, it would have been someone that must have been amazing to talk to. It’s his imagination and dreams that have given us so much joy in everything Disney. He really knew how to pull the kid out of us and more importantly, knew how to bring families together. When we were told that we would be taking a tour of Disney’s office restored in it’s original form, I was beyond excited. The tours are not open to the public but there have been tours given to D23 Gold Members. I would keep a look out to see if this opens to the public and it should go to the top of your travel list.
Walt’s office remained untouched for about a year after he died. Dave Smith, Disney Archivist was brought in to inventory and pack up Walt’s office. He took many photos to detail exactly how Walt had it, right down to the paper clips. When they restored his office they used Dave’s photos. Most everything is original but there are a few items that needed to be restored or re-created.
Let’s start our tour:
When you first walk in, you’re told no flash photography and your purses are left in cubbies.
We started by first going into his secretary’s office. It wasn’t very big but I’m sure she was a busy lady.
Walt had a formal office and a working office. We first walked through his formal office. You can picture him sitting taking calls and having business meetings.
One of my all time favorites is Babes In Toyland. I love that this was on his piano!
We then entered his working office. You can feel that it was where everyone rolled up their sleeves and got down to business. Again I picture legends like Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews sitting with Walt at his piano.
This map was very interesting because it showed what projects were completed (Red Plaques) and future projects that Walt envisioned (yellow Plaques)
